Having been the homes of a horde of present Hongkongers, Yuen Long is no stranger to everyone. Despite the rapid urbanization and industrialization, some if not a few foods, fortunately, managed to retain. Distinct utensils, a precise amount of ingredients, tactful procedures, excelling in every recipe made in the past are sure no easy task. Before sunset, these veterans have to do their prep-duty dicing, pureeing mixtures just to make sure they are enough to fill the early-wakers stomach.

Airplane Olives

Airplane Olives may seem unfamiliar to new generations even in the 00s due to the increasing exposure of alternatives. Made with salt, cinnamon, licorice, and herbs, this seemingly titchy ‘candy’ is said to be perfect for curing throat pains, clearing excess mucus. Flashback to the 1970s when everyone is so deprived of medical services that they could do nothing but make their airplane olives to treat sicknesses. It’s difficult to locate these itinerant hawkers, one tip is to dive into populous eatery streets like Kin Yip Street, oh and of course, you’ll need some luck too!

Egg Rolls

Yes, you heard me, egg rolls. True, you can obtain it everywhere from your nearby shopping mall, however, those are often made under standardized production. How about one that is 100% handmade? Observing the skillful worker whilst being immersed in the aroma of sweetness, it is pleasing if not satisfying to just stare and watch. It’s like the passion of the amateur and their skills jam-packed in one seemingly simple snack. The steaming hot egg roll follows down your throat, the dense eggy flavor just oscillates in your mouth. One reminder: remember to be there by 10 in the morning to get freshly–made egg rolls before it runs out of order!

Sweet Rice Sponge Cake

As plain as it looks, this is perhaps something that we should genuinely look out for. Be it the elderly or tiny tots, this sponge cake which comes in 2 flavors: white and brown sugar are just hard to resist — — — — spongy-like, jam-packed with extra sugar. Yes, it may not be the most wholesome food choice, but that airy and savory taste makes it an exception to your healthy diet. It’s light, super affordable yet guaranteed to meet your thirst for a filling supper. Looking for a palatable sweet rice sponge cake? Check out Mai Ki Pastry in Hang-Fu Building, 38 Yau San Street.
